Travelling Sustainably in 2026: What Actually Moves the Needle

A data-led guide to the travel choices that genuinely reduce your environmental impact — and the popular ones that don't. Flight class, route, and frequency are the real levers.

A single return economy-class flight from London to New York emits roughly 1.1 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per passenger. That is approximately two months of a typical UK household's combined gas and electricity use — compressed into seven hours of airtime. Put another way: the carbon from a transatlantic return is more than a year of driving a petrol car 10,000 miles for many travellers who already drive relatively little. The numbers are inconvenient, and the sustainable travel conversation often dances around them.

This article doesn't trade in guilt. But it does try to be honest about which travel decisions actually move the needle on personal environmental impact, and which ones amount to rearranging deckchairs. Because the gap between the highest-impact and lowest-impact choices is enormous — and most of the marketing energy in sustainable tourism is concentrated at the wrong end of the scale.

The scale of the problem starts with the flight

Aviation accounts for roughly 2–3% of global CO₂ emissions directly, but when you factor in the warming effect of contrails and high-altitude NOₓ emissions, the total warming contribution is estimated at two to four times higher — closer to 5–8% of effective global warming impact. For frequent travellers in wealthy countries, flights dominate personal carbon footprints in a way almost nothing else does.

The first lever — by far the most significant — is how many flights you take and how far they go. A single long-haul return can exceed the entire annual carbon budget a person would need to stay within a 1.5°C pathway. A short-haul flight within Europe is one-tenth of that, but still meaningful. The question “should I take this flight?” has more environmental impact than every other travel decision combined.

The second lever is cabin class. This surprises many travellers, but it is significant. Premium economy, business class and first class are not just more comfortable — they occupy a larger physical footprint on the aircraft, meaning they are allocated a greater share of the plane's total emissions. A business-class seat typically uses two to three times the floor space of an economy seat on a wide-body aircraft; on some carriers, first class uses four to five times as much. Most aviation carbon calculators now include a class multiplier. Choosing economy over business on a long-haul flight reduces your allocated emissions by roughly 50–70% on the same route.

Third: direct versus connecting routes. Layovers add take-off and landing cycles, which are the most fuel-intensive phases of flight. A direct long-haul route is almost always lower-emissions than a connecting one, even if the connecting total distance is slightly shorter.

When train travel is the real alternative

Within Europe, the train versus plane comparison genuinely favours the train — sometimes by a factor of ten to twenty. London to Paris by Eurostar emits roughly 6kg of CO₂ per passenger. The same journey by air (including airport transfer time and getting there) emits around 50–60kg. Paris to Amsterdam, Brussels to Cologne, Amsterdam to Berlin — these are all routes where the rail journey is comparable in total door-to-door time once you account for airport processing, and meaningfully cleaner.

The calculation flips on longer European journeys. London to Lisbon by rail is a 27-hour trip involving multiple connections; the flight is three hours. At that scale, the time cost is real, and many travellers will reasonably conclude the flight is the only practical option. The sustainable case for trains is strongest on routes where the rail journey takes under five to six hours — which, in practice, covers a substantial portion of popular European city pairs.

At the destination, the choice between a hire car and public transport or cycling matters more than most other ground-level decisions. Driving a petrol or diesel hire car is the highest-carbon option for getting around; an electric vehicle rental is substantially better where the local grid is relatively clean; trains, metros and buses are better still. Many travellers underestimate the emissions from a week of driving on holiday, particularly in countries where distances between sights are large.

Accommodation: what the certifications actually mean

The accommodation market has accumulated a thicket of sustainability certifications — Green Globe, EarthCheck, Travelife, Rainforest Alliance, Blue Flag, national eco-labels and dozens of regional variants. The quality varies enormously. Some require independent third-party audits of energy use, water consumption, waste streams and supply chain sourcing. Others are essentially self-reported questionnaires with no verification.

The most credible international standard for hotels is the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) framework, which sets baseline criteria that national certifications must meet to be recognised. When a hotel claims a GSTC-recognised certification, that is a stronger signal than a badge that names only the hotel chain's own in-house programme.

Beyond certification, the most material factor is energy source. A hotel running on renewable electricity — from on-site solar, a direct renewable energy agreement, or a grid that is largely hydro or nuclear — has a substantially lower operational carbon footprint than one running on diesel generators or a coal-heavy grid, regardless of what the towel-reuse sign says. In destinations where the grid is carbon-intensive (parts of Southeast Asia, some island destinations), the accommodation choice matters more. In countries with cleaner grids (Norway, Iceland, France, Canada), the hotel's operational emissions are lower regardless.

Staying in smaller, locally-owned accommodation also tends to circulate more spend within the local economy — a separate but related consideration under the broader frame of responsible tourism.

The things that don't really move the needle

This is the uncomfortable section. A number of widely-promoted sustainable travel behaviours have negligible effect on actual carbon footprint:

  • Refusing the hotel straw or plastic toiletries. Plastic waste is a real problem, but it is a separate problem from climate change. Declining a 5g plastic straw has no meaningful effect on CO₂ emissions — and conflating the two issues makes it easier to feel virtuous about small choices while ignoring the large ones.
  • Buying carbon-neutral-labelled food at the airport. The carbon in a sandwich is orders of magnitude smaller than the flight you are about to take. The labelling is real, but the scale is not commensurate.
  • Staying in an eco-lodge for one night at the end of a long-haul trip. One night of off-grid accommodation cannot offset a 10-hour flight. The eco-lodge may have other genuine benefits for local conservation or livelihoods — but that is a different argument.
  • Buying reusable items specifically for travel. A reusable water bottle has genuine value over thousands of uses, but manufacturing a new one for a single trip may produce more emissions than it saves if you already own one at home.

None of this means these behaviours are worthless — only that they operate on a different scale from flight and transport decisions.

Carbon offsetting: the honest assessment

Carbon offsetting has a credibility problem, and it is partly deserved. The voluntary carbon market has been plagued by projects that over-counted reductions, temporary storage (trees that burnt down), and additionality failures (forests that were never actually at risk). A 2023 Guardian investigation found that over 90% of Verra-certified rainforest offsets from one major programme did not represent genuine carbon reductions. That finding was disputed, but the underlying methodological problems were real.

The better-quality offset types in 2026 — based on current evidence — are those involving direct air capture (expensive, but verifiable), enhanced weathering, or biochar (permanent carbon sequestration). Avoided deforestation projects with rigorous third-party verification and community involvement are better than unverified equivalents, but the bar for “rigorous” is higher than most travellers realise.

The most useful framing is that offsetting should be treated as a last resort for emissions you genuinely cannot reduce rather than a licence to travel as usual. A well-chosen offset is better than nothing, but it is not equivalent to not emitting.

A practical framework for decisions

Reducing the environmental footprint of travel does not require stopping travel. It requires making the decisions that actually matter, in order of their impact:

  1. Fly less frequently and choose shorter routes where possible. One fewer long-haul trip per year has more environmental impact than all other travel decisions combined.
  2. Choose economy class on long-haul. The emissions difference is material, not marginal.
  3. Book direct flights. Every additional take-off adds disproportionate fuel use.
  4. Take the train for European city pairs under five or six hours' journey time. This is the most impactful ground-level switch available in the UK and Europe.
  5. At the destination, default to public transport or electric vehicles. Avoid petrol hire cars for longer stays in countries where public transport is viable.
  6. Choose accommodation with independent sustainability certification and, where verifiable, renewable energy.
  7. If you offset, use a high-quality, verifiable offset type and treat it as supplementary, not exculpatory.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is sometimes cited as a near-term solution. Several airlines now offer a SAF “contribution” option at booking — you pay a surcharge to fund SAF purchase. The technology is real and SAF does reduce lifecycle emissions meaningfully versus conventional jet fuel. But SAF currently costs three to five times more than conventional fuel and constitutes less than 1% of global jet fuel use. It is not yet a systemic solution; it is a marginal improvement at the margin. The airlines with the most credible SAF commitments are those with long-term offtake agreements and transparent reporting — not just a checkbox at the payment screen.

If you take one thing from this guide: the choice of whether to fly, how far, and in which class dwarfs every other decision. The rest is worth doing — but not as a substitute for thinking about the flight itself.
